Aussie Oil is ideal for use on most small items such as pendants, brooches, earrings, Pens, magnifying glass handles, key chains, letter openers, in fact almost anything made of wood. You can hold it comfortably in your hand for polishing.
INSTRUCTIONS
For use as a friction polish on the lathe.
Sand the wood through the grains to at least 800 grit, or higher for a more brilliant shine.
Grab a piece of clean soft cloth. Flannel is ideal because it has no grain in the material to mark or scratch the surface of the paint.
Make a small pillow of the cloth or fold it so that you have 4 to 6 layers like a thick wad. An easy way to do this is to cut your material into 100 to 150 mm squares, fold it in half and then fold it lengthwise into 3 equal parts. This will give you a nice piece of material of 6 thicknesses that will keep you from burning your fingers when you apply the oil at high speed.
Shake the mixture vigorously until it turns a creamy color, then add a small amount to the cloth, making sure there is just enough to cover the entire surface of the piece you want to polish. For the outside of a small bowl 150 mm in diameter, use enough to cover about half of your small fingernail. With the lathe stopped, apply this evenly over the area to be polished. Turn on the lathe and using the same piece of cloth, apply light pressure to the work and slowly move the oil-soaked part of the cloth over the entire surface from top to bottom and back again. Keep doing this until your rag has dried out on the face and becomes glassy and hard. This should take no longer than about 30 to 40 seconds.
If you want a brighter sheen, you can apply second and subsequent coats almost immediately by following the same steps as above. Do not sand between coats. Apply the oil directly to the previous coat. In most cases, 2 – 3 coats are more than enough to get a brilliant finish.
