Shellawax is a “foolproof,” one-coat finish product developed specifically for lathe use. It is (to our knowledge) the fastest and easiest-to-use product on the market that instantly gives an unprecedentedly beautiful shine to all wooden objects. It is used with the lathe turned on and, as a result of friction and heat, forms one with the wood. It dries instantly so the workpiece can therefore be handled immediately. Shellawax is also reasonably resistant to water, alcohol and the like after complete curing (over a period of about 3 weeks). Because Shellawax penetrates deep into the wood and forms a single entity with it, it is not a finish that lies on top of the wood but a permanent finish in the wood, making a Shellawax finish much more difficult to damage than, say, a traditional lacquer finish.

What does it consist of?

Shellawax is, as the name suggests, a combination of (hard) shellac and various types of wax including carnauba and beeswax. It is a product specially developed for finishing turned and carved wooden, plastic and stone objects where the main application is the fast and very beautiful finishing of woodturning.

How does it work?

The hardener in the product is activated by the heat released during the application of Shellawax. Once the surface is dry (almost immediately), a process begins by which the Shellawax bonds to the wood and causes the finish to cure. While the complete curing process takes about 3 weeks, the products can be fully handled immediately after application without danger of slowing down the curing process. Alcohol, water and the like can interfere with the process so carefully finished turnings should certainly not come into contact with them for the first few weeks.

Nach vollständiger Aushärtung (über einen Zeitraum von ca. 3 Wochen) ist Shellawax auch einigermaßen beständig gegen Wasser, Alkohol und dergleichen. Da Shellawax tief in das Holz eindringt und mit diesem ein Ganzes bildet, liegt keine Deckschicht auf dem Holz, sondern eine dauerhafte Beschichtung im Holz, wodurch eine Shellawax-Lackierung viel schwerer zu beschädigen ist als beispielsweise eine herkömmliche Lackschicht.

Woraus besteht es?

Shellawax ist, wie der Name schon sagt, eine Kombination aus (hartem) Schellack und verschiedenen Wachsarten, darunter Carnauba- und Bienenwachs. Es ist ein Produkt, das speziell für die Endbearbeitung von gedrechselten und geschnittenen Holz-, Kunststoff- und Steinobjekten entwickelt wurde, bei denen die Hauptanwendung die schnelle und sehr schöne Endbearbeitung von Holzdreharbeiten ist.

Wie funktioniert es?

Der Härter im Produkt wird durch die beim Auftragen von Shellawax freigesetzte Wärme aktiviert. Sobald die Oberfläche trocken ist (fast sofort), beginnt ein Prozess, der es dem Shellawax ermöglicht, sich mit dem Holz zu verbinden und die Oberfläche zu härten. Obwohl der komplette Aushärtungsprozess ca. 3 Wochen dauert, können die Produkte sofort nach dem Auftragen vollständig in Angriff genommen werden, ohne dass die Gefahr einer Verzögerung des Aushärtungsprozesses besteht. Alkohol, Wasser und ähnliches können den Prozess stören, deshalb in den ersten Wochen sorgfältig fertige Dreharbeiten nicht damit in Berührung kommen lassen.
